On February 14, 2018, a dreadful shooting took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. There was an Openfire with a semi-automatic rifle (AR-15 rifle) in the high school that gunfire caused a huge loss, leaving 17 people killed (14 students and 3 staff members) and 17 injured. After the Parkland mass shooting, the people who survived became activists and kept on pushing for change with the slogans like ‘Lives are greater than guns, protect kids, not guns.’
At the third anniversary of the Parkland mass shooting on Sunday, the US President Joe Biden called on a congress about making strict gun laws. The president took several actions such as terminating legal immunity for gun manufacturers, prohibiting high-capacity magazines and attack weapons, and background checks on all gun sales.
Biden said “The administration is not going to wait for another mass shooting for taking actions. We will take initiative to eliminate our infestation of gun violence, and we will make our communities and school safer”. “We owe this to all those we have lost.”
This call was taken by the US president after three years of the Parkland mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. People are feeling more confident than earlier after hearing about the refinement in gun laws.
President stated that his dedication towards handling gun violence goes back to his time on the campaign path when he fought for making strict gun laws.
Congress has struggled a lot to address the gun violence in America even when the mass shooting happened in Columbine in 1999. Under the former US President Donald Trump, some actions were taken to solve the issues of gun violence. However, the justice department banned the bump stock in 2018 after the attack that happened in Las Vegas in 2017 that killed 58 people.
