Mesalamine (also known as mesalazine and 5-aminosalicylate)is an orally available anti-inflammatory agent used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis to induce and maintain relief from the disease. Mesalamine therapy is associated with low rates of serum enzyme rise during treatment and rare cases of clinically obvious acute liver injury.Mesalamine is an agent derived from sulfasalazine,an anti-inflammatory agent. Mesalamine can reduce inflammation through inhibition of cycloxygenase and prostaglandin production. After rectal or oral administration,only a small amount of messalamine is absorbed,the rest acting topically reduces intestinal inflammation,diarrhea, rectal bleeding and abdominal pain.
