The Tech major Lenovo on Thursday, said it is significantly rising its domestic manufacturing capabilities in India over product categories like PCs, notebooks and smartphones, to reach the increasing customer demand. While the company did not reveal the investment being made, Lenovo said it is enhancing in India across all business lines, including PC and smart devices, smart phones, infrastructure solutions, and especially in the recently established services and solutions group.
Lenovo has increased its in-house PC manufacturing factory in Puducherry to add a third manufacturing line, while it has started local manufacturing of its tablet computers in collaboration with Wingtech Technology in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, smartphones for Motorola (a Lenovo group company) are now domestically manufactured in association with Dixon Technologies at Noida, Uttar Pradesh, a statement said.
These initiatives build up Lenovo’s commitment to the government’s plans of ‘AtmaNirbhar Bharat’. They also form part of Lenovo’s world manufacturing and supply chain plan, that helps consumers in 190 markets from 30-plus manufacturing sites around the world – which includes Argentina, Brazil, China, Australia, Germany, Hungary, India, Japan, Mexico, and the US. As stated by International Data Corporation, the total PC market size in India is expected to rise to more than 14 million units by 2023, as compared to 10 million units in 2020.
The total revenue for all Lenovo Group businesses in India was roughly USD 462 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2021, representing year-on-year growth of 31.3 percent. The Tirupati facility now produces a extended range of Lenovo tablets that meet the needs of customers, educators, and students, beyond those for specialised functions such as retail, manufacturing, and healthcare, the statement said. Lenovo has invested remarkably in automating and digitizing the facility, to make sure an efficient, seamless manufacturing process. There is also a regular testing area for all products and regular packaging lines. With this growth, every product will now have its own arrangement and test methodology, the statement said.
Shailendra Katyal, Managing Director at Lenovo India, said that with its operations, the company plans to create employment and skill building opportunities, and to lead its advanced, sustainable manufacturing technologies to India. He added, ”With our sincere commitment to manufacture domestically, the expansion of manufacturing capabilities in India will offer innovative devices of highest quality produced here and will be quickly brought to market”.
