The Frauds that happen with the UPI apps and E-wallet are impacting the rural population a lot. People in rural areas are not that educated and unknowingly share the details of payment to others leading to a big fraud and loss of money. This not only is affecting rural areas but also has affected their counterparts in urban areas in India. Many Fraudsters send payment request to rural people in order to steal money and get succeeded. The growing online transaction habit in India is making it hard to avoid the fraud caused due to UPI apps and E-wallets. According to the data provided by National Payments corporation of India almost 2.29 billion number of transactions have been done using UPI in India. The more the number of payments take place using UPI, the more is the chance to increase the Fraud due to it. The Scammers are doing this to find number of ways to steal the money earned by individuals using the UPI and E-wallets. Many of the victims of such scam can be seen posting daily on social media about it.
The list of victims not only include the rural populations but also the urban population is becoming a victim of this scam. Recently Harshita Kejriwal, daughter of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, was victimized to scam on selling a sofa worth Rs 34000. Social engineering can be found in various forms and we can call it as smishing and phishing. The UPI always asks for pin when one accepts the payment and the moment the pin is put which is the last step to transaction, the fraudsters are liable of making a fraud transaction towards your bank account. This is how the scam takes place and one get victimized for the online payment fraud. Various offline and online campaigns to inform their customers about frauds taking place through UPI apps and e-wallets by most of the top commercial banks. The NPCI has also shared few guidelines to avoid such frauds through their social media handles. Some people believed that few stringent policies and rules must be imposed on online payment in order avoid such frauds in future.
