G7 summit 2021: when and where it will be held?

After the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic globally, the first in-person global summit is going to be held from June 11 to June 13 this year. The UK has been selected to host the summit and the PM of the country Boris Johnson is the President of the G7 summit meet 2021. The summit is being held in the Carbis Bay Hotel in Cornwall. The officials of G7 have described that Cornwall has been chosen due to its “distinct cultural identity”. Additionally, this region has been selected to host the summit, as it is the centre of the UK’s green technology sector. This is the 47th summit.

However, last year, the summit was cancelled for the very first time since its formation. The G7 summit is being seen as a very important and crucial summit, as it leads to much awaited COP26UN Climate Conference, which is expected to be held in November 2021.

The G7 summit will be attended by representatives of the respective countries. The countries with their representatives which will travel to UK for attending the summit this year, are the President of the US Joe Biden, Japan PM Yoshihide Suga, France PM Emmanuel Macron, German chancellor Angela, Italy’s PM Mario Draghi, and PM of Canada Justin Trudeau. In addition, due to rising cases of COVID in India, the PM of India Narendra Modi will not travel to UK, besides he will attend the summit virtually. This is the first G7 summit for leaders of the US, Italy, and Japan.

In the G7 summit, there are seven different ministerial tracks which include environmental, economic, health, technology, trade, foreign policy issues, and development. According to the G7 summit’s officials, to handle the current crisis caused due to pandemic globally, is the prime and major issue highlighted in UK’s policy priorities. Apart from this, the major issues which are expected to be discussed in the summit are:
• Promotion of prosperity by offering free and fair trade.

The G7 is a group of the world’s seventh largest influential and advanced economies across the globe. It was created in 1976 as G6 summit, and became G7 when the PM of Canada was invited to join later. The group includes UK, the USA, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, and Italy, however the European Union (EU) attends every summit and discussion , but as a guest. China is the one of the largest economies out of all other countries, but is still not included in G7 summit due to its low level of wealth per person. Every year, the G7 summit invites different countries to be a part of it as a guest and this year, the President Boris Johnson has invited leaders from Australia, South Korea, India, and South Africa.
