What friction means in terms of technology companies? It means the steps that are required to get your thoughts from your mind and commands from your head into the computer using an interface. Right now, you might be using your laptop or might be surfing through your phone by touching it. Facebook is taking an initiative to remove this friction by using the augmented reality. Facebook is working on to shorten the distance between your brain and the computer or the cell phone you might be using. Facebook has its own reality lab which is named as Oculus Research in order to imagine the future of Human-Computer relationship.
Facebook has discovered many things related to the Augmented Reality. One of which is the smart glass invention idea which would have the ability to cancel the background noise and amplify desirable sound in real time by interpreting the wearer’s surrounding. This smart glass was thought to be the future of communication by Facebook consisting of microphones inside it and AI, which makes it easier to talk with people. Now Facebook is thinking of inventing a device that would fit on your wrist having a touch screen and would help you to interact with others, with help of AI. The wrist device would be about a size of a thin Wheat crackers square in shape. Facebook thinks that as wrist has a lot of neurons connected to the brain that gives signal from head to the hand, therefore wrist will provide ample opportunity to install a computer interface on Human. Facebook will use a process called electromyography, in which the device on the wrist will have sensors that will analyze electrical motor nerve signals, which would further be translated into commands using the electronic devices. Facebook demonstrated this idea by asking the users to move their fingers and see if the device works by checking the signal and the commands given by the hands. Later Facebook official also said that the signal could be depicted without any physical movement of your wrist or hands using the AI.
Apart from this, a research is still going on in the Oculus lab of Facebook to check what can be done to remove the friction by improving the computer’s ability to analyze the need of a person without his or her request physically. With the help of Augmented reality, Facebook is working to minimize the physical activity of Humans and help them to lead a better life. For this to happen, Facebook is trying to give computers, the ability to know the surrounding environment and help them present different options relevant to the current situation they are in. This is where the idea of smart glasses with small microphones and AI comes in. Those glasses would help the computer inside it, analyze the surrounding depending on the location, climate, and thus give relevant information about the situation. Augmented Reality is the Future of tomorrow’s world as per Facebook and quite a few measures are being taken by the innovative minds all over the world to bring this into reality in the near future.
