On Wednesday, the social media platform, Facebook started blocking users from sharing and viewing Australian news. Facebook has done this because of a proposed law in Australia that would want social media and digital giants to pay news publishers for content.
The statement of Facebook has come after Treasurer Josh Frydenberg defined it as “very promising” negotiations between Facebook and Google with Australian media firms.
The newly proposed Australian law also affected google and called the news media and digital giants negotiating code, because of this law, news channels have been facing problems to compete with tech companies for advertising dollars. Moreover, they have to recompense for articles presented on an online platform such as Google and Facebook. The social media platform Facebook’s decision also highlights the pressure between the government of Australia and the social media giant that is demanding to control the tech industry.
Facebook restricted the Australian users after Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. signed up for a revolutionary deal with Google, so that the media channels could be paid for news content. On Facebook, the Australian publisher can remain to publish news content on the social media platform such as Facebook, but the Australian users can’t post, share, and view the news, the company based in the US said in a statement. The user from Australia is not able to share Australian or global news and the Global users outside Australia are also not able to share Australian news.
After three years of discussion, Easton said that the key exchange among Facebook and publishers, run in favor of the publishers. He also said that “for Facebook, the firms gain from the news is minimal. People can see less than 4% of news make up in their fee.”
He also added he’s not been able to agree. “Instead, it seeks to penalize Facebook for content it didn’t take or ask for.”
