On 9th February, the 24-year-old tennis player, Mayar Sherif has become the first Egyptian woman to win the main draw of a grand slam match at the Australian Open, leading to being named in history. Mayar Sherif vanquished France’s Chloe Paquet in her first match by 7-5. The 7-5 at the Australian Open is set to secure the landmark victory. She won the second set with 6-5 in the Australian Open. The Australian Open was held in Melbourne. Sherif ranks 131st in the world in women’s singles. After that, in the second-round match, Sherif faced either Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan or the UK’s Johanna Konta.
Sherif made her first appearance at the grand slam French Open which was held last year. In the French open she was rejected in the first round with three times defeated by Karolina Pliskova. Sherif reached the Australian Open main draw after qualifying for the tournament which was held in Dubai last month. At the International Tennis Foundation’s Women’s Circuit, Mayar Sherif won eight singles titles and six doubles titles. Apart from it, in the African Games 2019, she won a gold medal. African Games were held in Morocco and in that she defeated South African player Storm Simmons with 2-0 in the final match. Besides the 2020 France Open, she had also participated in the 2020 Prague Open. In March 2020, according to the world rankings, she had achieved career-high rankings of 171 in singles, and 268 in doubles.
Additionally, Mayar Sherif has created a history in the world. After being rejected in the French Open last year, the Australian Open has been a great success for Mayar Sherif. She added in her comments that, the court was faster, the heat, and everything happened very fast, and also it was not easy for her to control the ball. However, her success shows her struggle to win the Australian Open held in Melbourne.
