The Supreme Court on Tuesday warned a law student not to call judges “Your Honour” because it was not the “US Supreme Court”.
If you call us ‘Your honour’, you seemed to have the mind of the US Supreme Court, the Chief Justice SA Bobde’s bench, and Judges A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian told a law student, after which, he immediately apologized to the bench and said he would call the court “Your Lordship”.
In this regard, CJI Bobde said, don’t use the wrong words.
The bench told him that in the US Supreme Court and in the magistrate’s court here, the court could be called “Your Honour” but not in the Supreme Court of India.
The bench then asked him what his case was, in which the student, who appeared in person, said his request was to strengthen the judicial infrastructure on the criminal side.
The bench told him he was aware that there was a case pending in the Supreme Court, where references to strengthen judicial infrastructure to the level of justice in a prudent manner has been submitted.
The law student pretended not to know after which the bench said it appeared, he had not done his homework before going to court.
It told the applicant that there was a pending case called Malik Mazhar Sultan versus the UPSC where guidelines were identified at the institution, various national governments and high courts to strengthen the infrastructure to a lesser degree of justice.
The bench adjourned the case for four weeks and asked the student to come and to be prepared for the next date of hearing.
