Biological defense refers to measures that restore bio security to groups of organisms that may or may be subject to biological threats or infectious diseases. Biological defense is often discussed in the context of bio ware or bio terrorism and is generally considered a military or emergency response term. Biological defense applies to two target groups: civilian non-combatants and military combatants(troops in the field). Protection of water supply and food supply is often an important part of biological defense. Military Biological Defense of the United States began in 1956 at Fort Detrick , Maryland , with a US Army medical unit. (Unlike the U.S. Army Biological Warfare Laboratory [1943-1969] at Fort Derrick , Usamu’s mission was to develop defensive measures against bio-agents, as opposed to developing weapons. Usamu was disbanded in 1969 and succeeded by today’s US Army Medical Institute (Usam Reed) .
