Amazon to open first cashierless store outside US

The Seattle company said it would buy the 2,500-square-meter Amazon Fresh-brand store in London. The store, like its American counterparts, will use multiple cameras and other sensors to track shoppers as they pull things off the shelves, and charge a credit card to the file after their exit. Stores represent giant retail effort and technology to rehabilitate physical retailing. Amazon also licensed the program, which is called ‘Just Walk Out’ technology, to other companies.

The store, located in Ealing in the London area is the first physical store outside the US. Amazon has opened 26 cashierless convenience stores under the Amazon Go brand in its home country, , according to its website. An Amazon spokesman said there were no plans to change the branding of US stores. The company is also working with a new line of the US stores with standard exit lines called Amazon Fresh.

As part of the launch, the company also unveiled a new type of food label in the U.K., called “by Amazon,” which will be sold in stores.
