Silage inoculants are additives containing anaerobic lactobacillus (laboratory) , which are used to manipulate and enhance fermentation in haystacks (alfalfa , grass , cereals) and corn silage. Silage making is about microbiology – a science we tried to avoid studying in school. It is difficult to discuss silage inoculation without entering into some microbiology. Improved dry matter recovery from silos is due to efficient fermentation with lactic acid. Undesirable fermentation produces a large amount of carbon dioxide , which is lost to the environment , resulting in dry material loss , otherwise known as “Shrinkage”. Dry matter losses in well – managed bunker silos can generally be reduced by 2-3 percentage points , from 15% to 12-13%.
