Primary alkaline or alkaline–manganese dioxide batteries were introduced in the early 1960s.The active material of primary alkaline battery is similar to the active material of zinc–carbon battery, zinc is anode material and manganese dioxide is cathode material.Zinc powder is used instead of zinc foil, and electrolytic manganese dioxide is used instead of natural or chemical manganese dioxide. The electrolyte consists of a concentrated potassium hydroxide solution with very high conductivity, especially at low temperatures, which allows excessive drain discharge and prevents anode passivation of zinc electrodes.
